Dev Update: Bug fixes, UI tweaks, and a V8 Update

Google Chrome's Dev channel has been updated to 2.0.160.0. The highlights for this week include a good number crash fixes and UI presentation and behavioral clean-up:
  • Fixes a number of tab dragging related crashes.
  • Fixes issue where Chrome could not be set as the default browser.
  • Add support for UA spoofing, and spoof Safari's UA string when loading URLs
  • Improving UI presentation in Vista and XP
  • We now generate a proper file name when dragging an image off the browser on to the desktop
  • V8 has been updated to version 0.4.9.3, read more in the V8 changelog.
  • Find about the Dev channel and how to subscribe at http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel.

Awesome, I noticed the window doesn't go off of the screen now! Thanks!

Just a quick note, did you mean "Google Chrome's Dev channel has been updated to 2.0.160.0." as that is the version number I have just updated to, I looked for an update again but no 2.0.169.0.

Excellent, the tabs are on the right place when maximized, things no more disappear, and Windows Live Hotmail now works.

Congratulations, you nailed it!

I also have a suggestion for the form autocomplete feature:
autocompletesuggestionjh5.png

Of course, when selecting an option using the keyboard, the delete key would also remove the item from the list just like the [x] icon.

I guess you also made the list sort alphabetically now (I didn't check too much), right?

Thank you for the update. I had reverted to FF in anticipation of this bug fix update, and I think I was going through withdrawal during this time. :)

I would like to make some comments/suggestions regarding Chrome's current download manager and it's method of downloading. I don't know how many agree with me on these matters, but I sincerely hope that a download manager similar to Firefox's would be developed for Chrome. I also truly hope that, as part of a revamped download manager akin to FF, Chrome would have the ability to open many files "on the fly" (I don't quite know how to explain this properly). I understand that many browsers download certain files to a temp file and automatically open them, such as pdf files, videos, and so forth. I very much prefer this method to simply downloading every file-type and manually opening it through the "buttons" that appear on the bottom of the Chrome browser.

Blogger Wesley said...

@Law: personally I think Google handles downloads much better than Firefox, perhaps Opera does the best job than all browsers.

I guess they should fine-tune the download screen, adding the same option to clear by day that the history screen has, and the ability to pause/resume downloads.

Also, there is something very important missing about this: when you close Chrome during a download, a warning should appear, since the download is stopped.

Wesley,

First off, sorry but I messed up on my blogger name...I corrected it from Law to Chris L. Carnakis, Esq. :)

I have never used Opera. In what way does Opera does the best job of handling downloads? Perhaps, Chrome would benefit from Opera's download handling?

11:11 AM, February 04, 2009
Blogger Wesley said...

@andre: Google Maps zoom is normal here, although no animation for it.

@Chris: Opera has a list with all dowloads very similar to a download manager like Free Download Manager, it asks what you want to do (open/save) and opens a Transfers tab, similar to Chrome.

And you know that if you click the download on the bar while it's downloading, you set Chrome to open it when it completes, right? I like that approach better than a dialog asking me what to do.

Wesley, I didn't know this about Chrome's method of downloading. Thank you!

I welcome everyone's input/opinions on my issues re Chrome's download manager and method of downloading!

My apologies for pressing on this matter. This is the first time I've actually been "excited" about a browser (well, aside from Firefox a few years ago). I believe that one of the most important aspects of computing has become the browsing experience, and I want stick with one browser for all of my needs! I absolutely love the speed, stability, and simplicity of Chrome. And, I truly believe that Google is dedicated to bringing us a truly remarkable browsing experience, especially since they are constantly working on making Chrome better. I actually cannot wait until the next dev channel update just to see what fixes/features are in store for us. Nonetheless, one of my few issues with Chrome has been its handling of downloads. So, keep the comments coming!

@Wesley : I don't like the crosses on the side, I think it makes it too stuffed. The keyboard del option would be enough, and indeed I've been disappointed to see it doesn't work, as with FF.

@Law : I personally like the dl manager itself, but I agree that an on "on the fly" file opening option is necessary. There are many downloads that I don't want to keep, I hate to regularly have clean up mandatory chrome downloads.

So what I'd like is for Chrome to prompt me for save/open, and when I choose Open it doesn't stay anywhere on the drive after I'm finished with it (of course I assume it has to be stored to some temp folder somewhere, but it has to clean itself when it's done).

@Andre : no Google maps slowdown observed (W7 x64)

Well, to get more specific about my google maps slowdown:
It only slows down dramatically when I use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom out/in and do multiple zoom levels at once. I remember when I first switched from FF to Chrome (at the very first release of Chrome) google maps would be so much faster than FF. Now it is way slower than FF again...
Let's hope that comes back at some point for me. :)

Okie, I am back to FF as I am finding it much much faster. The browsing is also smooth as compared to Chrome. I hope google guys are working on making it best. I like the google products and they have always brought ease in using the technology. I hope Chrome will live upto it...

Please don't add to many features - they'll slow things down too much!

By all means develop those features, but make them optional addons, so we can each customise our browsing, without having to load features we don't want or need, which will become time-wasting ballast

PLEASE allow for plugins soon so the community can start developing. The download manager needs work, I agree with the posters above. I want progress bars instead of this silly pie graph thing you guys have going on. Why not use the whole button area as a progress bar while it's downloading? And display an actual bar on the download page. And as stated before, WARN or RUN IN THE BACKGROUND if you close the last google window but a download is active. Why is this not fixed yet?! Files should also be allowed to Restart and Resume after being cancelled. If someone cancels a download manually, give them the option to delete the file entirely. Else, leave the fragment and allow us to resume!

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who has common sense anymore :)

You mention UI improvements on this release. Can someone using this version (I'm on stable) tell me what this means? Will those of us on XP finally get something different from the blue window border?

2:56 PM, February 11, 2009
Blogger ReanimationXP said...

@Tom - from what I can tell, it's nothing significant. They actually made the UI a little worse functionally.

The bookmark tookbar buttons are slightly bigger and seem to have more of a fade in and out effect when you hover over them. The same changes have been applied to the X, Max, and Min buttons. However, when your mouse is stationary on any of these buttons and you click down, the 'down' state doesn't always appear, and if it does, it comes about a second later. Sometimes they work fine, most of the time they don't.. not sure what else has been upgraded here. Tabs seem functionally the same as well.

Not sure why this was a 2.0 release.. as not much has changed.

While browsing through various literatures about the 'chrome', I noticed that this program serves many of the Indian languages, namely,Malyalam, Tamil, Telgu etc.
Urdu and Hindi are very important languages of India. Besides Urdu is essential language of Pakistan.
It may be, you already have the program available in the said languages and I don't have knowledge about it.
I do hope this note will be helpful for the cause that has been raised in it.
