Beta Update

Google Chrome's Beta channel has been updated to 2.0.172.23. This release includes about 200 changes pulled in from the releases subsequent to 2.0.172.2.

Some highlights for this release:
  • Lots of UI tweaks, bug, and stability fixes!
  • Added the ability to remove most visited thumbnails from the New Tab page. (Issue: 685)
  • Autocomplete now pulls suggestions from search engines that support the functionality, and retains a history of those searches. For example, if you have searched from wikipedia.org in the past, start typing wikipedia.org in the omnibox, press the Tab key then a search term and suggestions and past searches will appear for Wikipedia. (Issue: 3636)
  • Added a confirmation box when closing the browser with in progress downloads. (Issue: 1028)
  • Added "Reopen closed tab" and create "New Tab" to the context menu on the tab bar. (Issue: 2144)

A detailed list of changes in this release is in the release notes.

Why the beta version number is higher than dev?

Where's my Dev Version

It looks like they're playing catch up this week and focusing on imports from dev to beta/stable, and I can't blame them for that... they have to keep track of three different versions of the browser and I think the bulk of users are still using the 1.* releases.

The dev version is 177.1. If you haven't been updated, please try installing from http://www.google.com/chrome/eula.html?extra=devchannel .

As Locke comments, the Dev channel build got bottom priority this week with two Stable updates and a Beta update (the Beta update required two passes through QA when we found some major issues).

Expect a Dev channel update on Tuesday (if the builds at http://build.chromium.org/ stay green!).

At first sight it does indeed seem the worst stability issues have been fixed. Lets hope it keeps looking that way, and until I have anything else to add; good work!

I've changed channels from dev to beta. So why isn't this update installed on top of 2.0.177.1?

when I moved from stable to beta it said that moving back up in stability would require un -> re instilation, try uninstalling dev, but make sure to save your favorites/preferences in case anything goes wrong

Doekman, read here: http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel
In short, you must use Channel Changer to select the one you want and then uninstall, reinstall, and (in case you don't want the stable channel) use Channel Changer again.
