Beta Update: Mac and Linux

The Google Chrome Beta channel for Mac and Linux has been updated to 5.0.307.7. You can read about it on the Google Chrome Blog.

We've been adding many of the features that were missing on the Mac, and working hard on making Google Chrome on both platforms more reliable. We've spent a lot of time making plug-ins (like Adobe Flash Player) more reliable.

What's new on Mac since the last Beta update?

Highlights of Linux Fixes
  • [r34915] Fix a hang on many sites using custom fonts. (Issue: 29861)
  • [r37193, r36423, others] Improvements in GTK theme mode, using system colors in more places (new tab page, highlights, scroll bars). (Issue: 25831, 29948))
  • [r37201] We now also will load plugins from ~/.config/$PRODUCT_NAME/Plugins. (Issue: 22261)
  • Improved complex text support, fixing a number of bugs in Hebrew/Arabic/Hindi/etc. display.
  • [r34222] OOM killer should now kill runaway tabs before it kills the browser. (Issue:29752)

Highlights of Mac Fixes
  • [r36016] Support pinch to zoom on the Mac. (Issue: 16305)
  • [r35440] Cmd-three finger swipe opens prev/next page in new tab. (Issue: 29804)

Users can subscribe to the Beta channel by installing from

If you find new issues, please let us know by filing a bug at http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/entry.

I am having trouble updating on my Ubuntu 9.10 machine. Updating with update manager doesn't work, it looks like a problem with the update server or something. Hope its fixed soon.

Both the Linux and Mac Beta consistently give me an "Aw, Snap!" tab in the acid3 test. Sadness.

@jefferino4 I have seen this too, but only on my home Mac. The solution is to first delete Chrome from /Applications, then copy the new one in. I'm not sure why this happens only on one of my Macs.

There's another bug with using Tumblr.com. Crashes whenever you try to post something from the bookmarklet or the site. It didn't crash when using the last build of the Chrome Beta

I installed the new Linux beta on Ubuntu 9.10 and now Gmail will not load.

It gets to the end of the loading bar and hangs.

Something strange happened with the theme colors. I have white backgrounds with white text on the bookmarks bar section in the start page. I'm using Kubuntu 9.10 and have tried both "system" theme and "default" theme with the same result.

Other than that, it seems to be working alright.

Chrome now cannot submit bug requests for whatever whacked out reason. So I'll post the bug text here:

Chrome Version : 5.0.307.7 dev
URLs (if applicable) : All
Other browsers tested:
Add OK or FAIL after other browsers where you have tested this issue:
Safari 4:OK
Firefox 3.x:OK
IE 7:NA
IE 8:NA

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. open system prefs->network->advanced->proxies, configure PAC location
2. disable vpn-only connection to proxy, proxy as specified in PAC is on non-portable/public space and cannot be reached outside VPN
3. observe all connections working flawlessly

This was working before. Direct entries for http/https work as expected. Please fix this.

What is the expected result?
All connections should fail when the proxy cannot be reached. I have not 'DIRECT' option anywhere - the ONLY option is via the VPN.

What happens instead?

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.

And the actual message I get when trying to post a bug:

Bad Request

Your client has issued a malformed or illegal request.

The new update crashes a lot on Linux, Fedora 12. On some pages the crashes are consistent (e.g. the acid3 test) and on others it is random -- it crashes on the first visit but then works on refresh.

Starting with a new profile seems to make things more stable, but this version still seems a lot less stable than the previous beta version.

Does anyone know where I can find the rpm for the previous linux beta (4.x.x)? It doesn't appear to be available in google's yum repository anymore.

Ok, I found the Task Manager in the menu: View->Developer->Task Manager...but my comment about lack of Shift-Esc stands.

The tumblr crashing has driven me back to Safari for when I want to post there. Its very annoying as part of tumblrs appeal is the ease in posting quick things from around the web. If the bug isn't fixed soon, I'll probably go back to Safari until it is.

I'm wondering if Google Chrome will run on Solaris (w/o installing something like BrandZ or VirtualBox, etc.). There's apparently a BSD port and a Linux port and if anyone has performed a Solaris install successfully I'd really be interested in knowing if there were any problems.

Also, I saw that there were deb/ub/RH-Fed/and SuSE packages, but I'm interested in installing on Slackware 13.0 (both ix86 and 64, or at least Slack64 w/32 bin support), and SalixOS too, so what I think I'm most interested in is sources so I can just compile/install by hand, or a binary tarball I can install.

Of course I suppose I *could* go the long way around and use rpm2tgz and then bundle it up from there.

As soon as I know about the Solaris port I'll be able to create actual packages for Solaris 10 as well as Slackware 13.0 and SalixOS, making them available for easy d/l installs for anyone in the community that is interested.

Lemme know and thanks in advance for any information you may have on these matters!

Kindest regards,

Bradley
