Is there any link which has the list of features which are planned for Chrome 5 release?

I agree :) Milestone 5 seems to be significant for Linux/Mac in that it seems to be the first forthcoming stable release for those, but are any major features planned for Windows?

Perhaps still shrouded in secrecy though... ;)

The --pinned-tab-count command line switch no longer works in the Windows Chrome 5 beta version. This was a great feature of Chrome 4.1. Is there some way to replicate the functionality?

I really don't like the new pinned tabs... I can't close them anymore, wtf? Plus, I enjoyed pinning my tabs by dragging my normal tabs to the left.

Ideally there should only be 2 channels. Stable and beta+dev. Three are too much to handle. Also, please implement "Find whole word only" and "Match case" in the Find on this page feature before shipping 5.0 in Stable channel.

I also liked being able to drag the tabs to pin them. You should be able to lock the extension toolbar so the resizing bars disappear.

In the current 5.0 beta (Windows XP) I get an error "Unsafe JavaScript attempt to access frame with URL" when trying to load another page into a frame or IFrame (all are file:// URLs). It worked perfectly in 4.1 stable. Lots of the Intranet pages here no longer work in 5.0 beta due to this error.

thought better windows 7 integration was coming with 5.0 release?
or do we have to wait for 5 to go stable?

What a mess.

Updated to the latest 5.xxx beta and now Chrome hangs each time I start the browser. CPU usage is not going below 50%...

Windows XP PRO SP3.
Would be great if Chrome developers could make it more easy to go back to previous version installed.

This is not good!

Regarding the "Unsafe JavaScript attempt to access frame with URL" error I mentioned earlier today for local web pages: It can be avoided by always starting chrome.exe with the option --allow-file-access-from-files.

Though I do understand the background mentioned in http://blog.chromium.org/2008/12/security-in-depth-local-web-pages.html I feel that this restriction is sort of annoying since it blocks many legal Intranet applications.

The app/phantom tabs are fantastic!

However, one thing would make them even better: an option for the app tabs to stay in there phantom or unloaded state after browser startup. Then each tab wouldn't take up resources until the user decided to use use one or more of them.

This is the best version ever!!

Hope this browser itself the OS :)

@Shamrock: thanks for the comment. The file:// restriction is my fault :) It's a very useful security boost to have enabled by default. Good job on finding the flag to enable old behaviour.
The current file:// restrictions did go a little farther than necessary. See http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=37798. Feel free to comment regarding your exact use case.

I heard about Windows 7 integration what with the task bar tabs/windows whatever display like in IE (if that's not too confusing) which I'd like to veto. If I want to manage my tabs like that, I'll just use windows.
I don't like the enlarging of app tabs icons, mostly because it makes the favicons look pixelated.
The closing app tabs should not make them fade out, I think it'd make more sense to have that be a separate option. When I click close, I mean close.
Dragging tabs to make them app tabs is something I used a lot, and would like back please!
No glitches or anything, just whining about what I don't like...
Still loving Chrome over any other browsers.

@Chris: Thanks for your response. A typical application of file:// in a frameset is an Intranet help system with two frames in a set, one for topics and the other one for the content of a selected topic.

The current beta 5 (if launched without the file access option) opens the frame link in a new tab, not in the other frame. Using Javascript to fill the other frame, e.g. when searching for a topic, throws an "Unsafe JavaScript attempt..." error.

I think that loading something into another frame is no security leak by itself. Accessing the *content* of the other frame like innerHTML would be a different story, of course.

And now for something completely different...

The configuration dialog is too high for being displayed completely on a Netbook with 1024 x 600 pixels.

While it is possible in Windows XP to move it up in order to reach the Close button, Windows 7 does not allow to move the window upwards (beyond the top of the display) so that it is impossible to click the Close or Abort buttons.

Shrinking the dialogue a bit should not be a problem since there is enough unused space in it. (This is not a new problem, it has been there in 4.1 also and possibly in earlier versions.)

So the difference between 4.1 and 5.0 is... nothing?

Talk about version number inflation...

There's more to this version than just the translate off-switch. I don't recall 4.1 having the ability to hide the browser actions on the toolbar.

@Wizard:
zoom settings on sites is remebered across sessions, reordering/hiding browser action is allowed, and much more alredy on dev still to come!

to those who complain about it being too buggy... use the stable version.

to the one who complained that 3 channels are too much... why? just use whichever you like. And unless you are an actual developer you should not use the dev version, only beta or stable (I recommend stable for average users).

I agree that this is some ridiculous number inflation that v5 has no new features over v4.

I agree with comments above - I would really like to see the "Drag to pin" come back.

Further, clicking on the left side of the leftmost tab brings up the Windows menu now (has it always?). This is a nuisance to me. I tend to accidentally double click there, closing the whole window.
Could we switch it to right-click for the menu, or (somehow) change it so double-click does something less "destructive" (such as open a new tab)?

6:48 PM, March 29, 2010
Fabio_Rulez said...

@Cody: that was done to match windows normal behavior. Try double click on the upper left corner of a folder, or in the notepad, or in word.. you will close the window. single click brings you the window menu. that is the expected behavior of an application in windows environment.

what i would like to see is a bookmarks SIDEBAR!
the only reason i still use firefox for most my browsing is its lack in chrome... even IE manages to have a bookmarks sidebar.

Bookmark Sync seems a bit flaky. I have 3 computers setup and 2 of them stopped updating shortly after updating to the most recent beta. I had to force them to sync manually by stopping sync and starting the sync setup over again. Sadly I had just finished reorganizing my bookmarks and the deleted/moved items got merged back in. Not sure if that was because of stopping the sync or because there were a lot of changes...
