Wow! One of my suggestions was actually implemented with this release: moving the bookmark star over to the right! Thank you! In fact, I am extremely happy with the changes to the Omnibox and also love how new tabs seems to slide out of the existing tabs. Wonderful!
Nevertheless, I am still begging for the ability/option to open/run files (i.e. downloading them to the temporary internet folder) instead being required to download them, then opening/running them. Please implement this feature.
And, please bring back "Clear browsing data" into the Tools/Wrench menu.
Thank you for all of your efforts, Google Chrome Team!
Why changed shortcuts? I used to CTRL+Shift+B for bookmark manager and CTRL+B for bookmark bar. And now there's no shortcut for bookmark manager and you changed CTRL+B to CTRL+Shift+B for bookmark bar.
Thank you so much for reverting to Aero peek on a per window only basis. Chrome has returned to a usable state for me. I would have listed that as a major windows feature for this release.
In regards to the changes being made to the omnibox, I filed this request for the content settings icon: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=39924 Please star it if you agree. Also, why has flash not been updated, I thought the whole point was to keep it up to date?
I agree with Chris about removing the content setting icons. Moving the bookmark star to the right has just further increased the amount of crap polluting the right side of the omnibar.
The changing of Ctrl-B and removal of Ctrl-Shift-B is REALLY, REALLY dumb. It makes me thing that Google Doesn't have usability experts working for them.
A user rarely hots control-B when entering text in a rich text edit field to bookmark. As a result, the browser should initiate the BOLD action when the user is in the textarea, when not, the ctrl-B should do the bookmark action.
This is just annoying. If anything, they should have removed the bookmark bar hiding shourtcut.
1 - Little star in Chrome right side BY DEFAULT or in "options", please! I don´t want wait anymore! I don't want to write --bookmark-menu. I want it default or options.
2 - Click in a letter to find a bookmark in bookmarks folder ir URGENT!
Because these two problems i don't use Chrome anymore...
I installed 2 portableapps.com VersionS of Google Chrome, one is the Dev Channel @ http://portableapps.com/news/2010-02-24_-_google_chrome_portable_4.0.249.89 (The other is the Portable STABLE Chrome version.)
So here's my question: When it comes time to update the Dev Channel PORTABLE version with newer DEV CHANNEL version, will it keeps all the EXTENSIONs I installed from the older version? How will this action, affect the Portable STABLE version?
I'm guessing flash hasn't been updated because there's only a release candidate of it out?
I wonder what's involved on their side for updating flash... if it's simple then an option for downloading the beta's could be nice, some of the upgrades have been targeting Chrome.
Why have you removed the Aero Peek feature in Windows 7? It's a must-have for me. Is there a command-line switch to turn it on? If not, Chrome will become unusable for me.
@Wesley: They probably need to wait until Adobe ships them new binaries. Just because Adobe has updated the ActiveX and NPAPI version of the Flash plugin doesn't mean they have yet done it also for the special build for Google Chrome.
Wow the shady thing and win7 issues are finally gone, thanks.
Ctrl+Shift+B combination for bookmark are not so good. I think many people are hiding this bar and use it only than they are need favorites. Please make a bookmark bar more usable and nice looking.
i don't know this is right to place to request new features but i would like to have block content feature similar to opera....its really most used feature by me....except this i love all the feature implemented by u recently like automatic translation.. new tab slide effect....giving us more options in content settings.
You mention not using --no-sandbox. But for many users that is the only way that they can get chrome to work. Please look at this help forum post and give the users there a practical option to run chrome without the --no-sandbox parameter (without an OS reinstall)
In the address bar, you should use a line to separate the bookmarks bar from the other icons. Or, you could change "Other Bookmarks" to "Bookmarks", and have a menu where you can save the bookmark, much like IE.
I can see the logic behind the Star on the right, it shares similar functionality with some notification icons and makes sense to group these together. Maybe just change the styling a bit to make it clear that this is a Chrome feature and not an extension feature.
Now you just need to add an option to move the things back that were fine where they were before. Please fix real issues instead of fucking around with the UI people are used to.
Found bug probably (On Mac) When you have almost full list of "other bookmars" (on the right) but not enough to have scroll arrow at the bottom. After moving mouse under bookmarks list it starting to scroll over the chrome.
not a fan of ctrl+shift+b for bookmarks - makes it at two-handed operation. In a text field makes sense for ctrl b to make bold, outside of that it should be bookmarks. Also seem to be getting a lot of aww snap messages on this release
I'm assuming they reverted the change to Aero Peek so they can make it work properly and then re-implement it. It wasn't drawing the thumbnails or window previews on mouse over most of the time.
I don't understand why anyone wouldn't want it? What is the disadvantage of being able to select a tab directly from the preview rather than having to bring Chrome to the front and then select the tab?
In any case, an option to choose your preferred behavior of Aero Peek would be great.
I am getting more than a handful of crashes that i have never seen before. It doesn't seem to happen on any particular website either. Can we get a quick fix/update for this please?
Please, please, please add an option in the settings to display the icons in the omni bar the way that they used to be (Star on left and Security icon on right)
I'm not a fan of the star on the right at all.
Plus I'm used to glancing to the right to see if the page is secured.
I've been using Chrome since day one and this change is really screwing with me...
@thinkNsidedabunNOToutsidedabox Hello, I am the author of that portable wrapper. :)
Your extensions and all of your profile data will be saved between upgrades. Simply install a newly downloaded version of GCP into the same folder (usually the default) as the previous version to do an upgrade. Please note that Google's internal update mechanism does not work in Google Chrome Portable because of the absence of the not-portable Google Updater tool.
Google does not and cannot support Google Chrome Portable or updates of it, please get support for GCP at portableapps.com forums int he future, thanks! :)
Please move the damn star back to the left. Agree with others that the GUI is fine.. quit messing with it. Leave the refresh icon there, as all controls should be together, but move the star back to the left please.
In summary:
-MOVE THE STAR TO THE LEFT AGAIN -LEAVE REFRESH WHERE IT IS; MAKE IT STANDALONE LIKE THE HOME BUTTON -CTRL+B. WTF.

1. Seriously, ctrl+B for bookmarks bar, ctrl+shift+B for bookmarks manager. 2. Make it an option to have the bookmark star on the left OR the right. 3. I like the new position for the refresh button. The bookmark shortcut is clearly a glitch & I'm sure the Chrome team get the point by now.
For the star, does it really matter that much which side its on? The click action shares far more functionality with the other notification icons than with the page info box, which I presume is Chrome's reason for moving it.
What logic do people have for wanting it on the left besides reluctance to change? I'm used to it already after a day, it's not a browser-changing issue like some people seem to be suggesting.
I'm okay with star to the far right.. but I think there should be a non-invasive separator between the star button and the page actions, just to make clear are two different things. If you think the same way of me please star this bug:
Recently I found it is able to sync preferences, auto-fill data and themes in Chrome. I think this is a remarkable feature. I suggest you can add the feature to synchronize the extension data. I truly don't understand the resistance to the new UI, especially the placement of the bookmark star on the right side. I had suggested this a while back, and I think that it's a welcome change. Now, most of the navigation buttons are grouped together on the left side; the UI is now more sensible. To me, the bookmark star's placement on the left side seemed out of place, and I would even accidentally click on it from time to time as a resulting of having it so close together with the other navigation buttons. Mozilla Firefox's placement of the bookmark star is also on the right side, and I don't believe that there is much argument about it.
Regarding additional UI suggestions, I would go so far as to say that I would appreciate the "Other bookmarks" button be moved to the far left of the bookmarks bar, and I would rename it as only, "Bookmarks." This would cut the size of the button by almost one-half. Now, all navigation buttons would be grouped together on the left side, and I believe that this is a sensible approach to the UI. In addition, I would suggest that the bookmark bar buttons be cut in size by approximately one-half. For example, they can just be a small icon button ("g" for Google) rather than the icon and the name of the link ("g Google" for Google). This would further simplify the UI.
I still must put forth the suggestion for Google Chrome to add the option/ability to open/run files on the fly (i.e. save them to a temporary internet folder) rather than only being able to download, then open them. I have this feeling that the Google Team will implement this feature (and, it may take some serious re-working of the way Google Chrome handles downloads), but I would love to see it sooner than later.
Finally, I must also suggest that the Google Chrome Team bring back the "Clear browsing data" option into the Tools/Wrench menu as I believe that many users would welcome this option. I usually clear my browsing data before exiting (or, if given the option, set the browser to clear all cookies before exiting). I do not simply rely on going Incognito to achieve this result. The other browsers include this option under one of their menu bars as well as in their options area. Redundancy is good. :)
I am passionate about this browser and have been since Google first released it. I take the time out of my busy schedule to make suggestions on this blog in an effort to help make Google Chrome a better browser. I understand Google's approach to this end: speed, simplicity, security and stability. I hope that my suggestions are either implemented, seriously considered, or in the alternative, constructively criticized in an effort to make Google Chrome a better browser.
As Socceryo3 said, every single Gawker site goes down right after it fully loads. I am getting random crashes all over the place as well. Hopefully Google will update this version pronto as Chrome is basically unusable to me if I can't visit those sites.
I agree; this is CRASHING A LOT, for some reason; almost on verge of becoming unusabile. I hope my chrome browser is reporting those crashes automatically to the dev folks, so I dont have to pinpoint the crashing sites etc.
Is there any way to install the previous dev release. This version crashes all the time. I mean I am expecting it to crash if I bump the mouse while typing this message. Move the wheel to fast and crash. I have had at least 30 crashes in the two days since I upgraded.
Same here. This release crashes constantly. The previous release was great. This one on the other hand crashes all the time. I start typing, click something etc. crashes.
I'm thinking that a lot of these reported CRASHES could probably be the result of added EXTENSION incompatibility. I'm running Win Vista 32 and this latest release is very stable (on my Dell laptop) - I do not use a lot of added EXTENSIONS.
Maybe trying to DISABLE a few EXTENSIONS to see if the CRASHES stop might be an idea?
Its odd, the first night this build seemed rather stable... however after that it just was crash central. had to switch back to stable :( shame, because i really like what was changed.
The left side icons have info about the current page (is bookmarked / is https).
The right side icons are tools (extension related).
Please move the star back to the left. I miss the quick glance to see if a page is bookmarked, and finding it between the mess of icons on the right is not as easy.
Love the new lay-out. More on my win7 then on xp though. Also I only have one extension up and running and didn't had any crashes at all. I do believe the new place for the star button is better then before, especially switching on my pc and laptop to this new build because I liked it!
Please dear God move the bookmarks star back to the left. I absolutely, like more than 90% of the people who've commented, hate it on the right. It seems Chris L is the only dummy to want it there. It ruins the flow and is completely screwing up my user experience. I've started not recommending Chrome because of this, and I am a Google JUNKIE. There's a great TED Talk about how small things like that can mean all the difference for an end user. Please change it back. I am absolutely begging you, Google, PLEASE put it on the left side. Please. Please. Please.
Also, Ctrl+B was a good thing, but I can live with Ctrl+Shift+B. I cannot live with the bookmark star on the right of the omnibox. =(
The bookmark star change was infantile. Leave it where it was - in context to other web address tools like home, reload, etc. Moving it to the right, close to app tools is just a simple idiotic UI screw up as if you had help from an India based engismearing team.

What exactly does the "geolocation support" do?
Why changed shortcuts? I used to CTRL+Shift+B for bookmark manager and CTRL+B for bookmark bar. And now there's no shortcut for bookmark manager and you changed CTRL+B to CTRL+Shift+B for bookmark bar.
Why? I really don't like that.
Geolocation:

Reason for changed bookmark bar shortcut?

Why would geolocation support be added? Now websites can track where I actually am.

I agree with Chris about removing the content setting icons. Moving the bookmark star to the right has just further increased the amount of crap polluting the right side of the omnibar.
The people who moved the Star icon (Bookmark indicator) should have also allowed us to be able to drag and drop that star icon to the Bookmark bar
@AshMan You can still drag the icon to the 'left' of the http:// to your bookmark bar.

I don't particularly like how the new tabs do that bounce-back effect now, the sliding is good but the bounce is overkill.
Ditto previous comments that the star should be draggable to the bookmarks bar and the bookmark shortcut should be ctrl+B.
Thanks for the update, I like it so far :D. Keep the new features coming, that's why I like the dev channel :P.

Why does it say "Beta"
Every time i go to the wrench and click about Google Chrome, to see if there any updates, it says "5.0.371.0 beta"
Richard, that's because you have the Beta version, not the Dev version. You need to uninstall the Beta and install the Dev if that's what you want.
Tornadoes28 there was no Beta update 5.0.371.0, and I did uninstall and i reinstall, still says the same thing.

Ok, so after reading through the following issue, I get the security Icon on the left of the URL:

I hope that my suggestions are either implemented, seriously considered, or in the alternative, constructively criticized in an effort to make Google Chrome a better browser.
There are essentially two reload-buttons now though. Isn't that a bit overkill?
Now crashes on www.chase.com after login
All Gawker websites cause mine to crash. Well, cause the tab to crash after they load fully.
Please, prepare the list command lines of Chrome.exe
Cannot found all command lines in Google Chrome support pages. Need to be collected.

this version crashes a lot. I don't know what's wrong, flash related, might be.
As Socceryo3 said, every single Gawker site goes down right after it fully loads. I am getting random crashes all over the place as well. Hopefully Google will update this version pronto as Chrome is basically unusable to me if I can't visit those sites.
I agree; this is CRASHING A LOT, for some reason.
I agree; this is CRASHING A LOT, for some reason; almost on verge of becoming unusabile. I hope my chrome browser is reporting those crashes automatically to the dev folks, so I dont have to pinpoint the crashing sites etc.
Flash crashing big time
Is there any way to install the previous dev release.
I start typing, click something etc. crashes.
The Skull and Bone icon beside the Https url is not a good idea.
23 crashes yesterday.
This version is crashing a lot. Loads some of the page hen get the aw snap message.
crashes a lot on vista here...
Just to add to what everyone else is saying here - multiple (double digits) crashes per day.
Lots of errors reported in console.log - "Not implemented reached in virtual void" to "Call to set process name failed".
Yep, all Gawker sites are killing the browser!
Crashes alot!
Please hurry with a new release. This release is not very stable. Still crashing a lot at various times on both Vista and XP.
Crashing a lot for me when it never did before...I'm using Windows Vista.
I have a shitton of extensions and haven't had a single unusual crash since this update. Control the internet rage, dude.
Its odd, the first night this build seemed rather stable... however after that it just was crash central. had to switch back to stable :( shame, because i really like what was changed.
crashhhhh
The new star location is inconsistent:
The left side icons have info about the current page (is bookmarked / is https).
The right side icons are tools (extension related).
Please move the star back to the left. I miss the quick glance to see if a page is bookmarked, and finding it between the mess of icons on the right is not as easy.

Love the new lay-out. More on my win7 then on xp though. Also I only have one extension up and running and didn't had any crashes at all. I do believe the new place for the star button is better then before, especially switching on my pc and laptop to this new build because I liked it!
@Chris L.,
You can already reduce bookmarks to only the favicon with no name. Just delete the name from the bookmark.
bring back ctrl+b for bookmarks bar.
