I just upgraded to Windows Dev Chrome 6.0.408.1 and I can no longer see my installed web apps in the New Tab Page. I am running with --enable-extension-apps

I had the sample Google Maps web app and my own unpacked web app installed and working using 6.0.401.1, but now my New Tab Page does not show any installed apps!

Anyone else encountering this?

I read that WebM will hit the dev-channel on the 24th.

I'm not too keen on the new tab behavior. Previously, when closing tabs, the size of the tab stayed the same until you removed the cursor from them. Now tabs resize as soon as one is closed.

Agree with previous commenters: the new Chrome version 408.1 crashes upon Windows starting from sleep mode.

I am using Win7 Pro 32-bit. Awaking Windows from sleep immediately causes Chrome to crash. You had this problem in a previous version too (one of the 5.x versions, I think), but it was solved by subsequent releases.

I really want my bookmark bar back though... the change makes it difficult to access your bookmarks now, especially if you keep the bar hidden. I suppose I could enable the bookmark menu (--bookmark-menu).

Yes, the new behavior of tabs is very problematic. It seems if you have a bunch of "NewTab" pages open, the behavior of these tabs when closing them is just fine. However, if you browse to web content with each of these tabs, closing them automatically resizes the tab, forcing one to move the mouse each time they want to close another tab.

This used to be advertised as a "feature" of Chrome early on and I loved it and use it a lot. Now, it seems to be vanishing... I hope it was just an accident.

I'm curious to know what you have to gain from spamming the forums, other than getting blog hits. Your "tips" might be useful for people looking for a portable version of Chrome, but this has been done several times before... in many cases, without needing all of those steps.

Yet, you say this solves a bunch of problems. What problems do these steps propose to solve (other than, of course, generate more hits for your blog)?

Your post is terribly off-topic, by the way, but I'm sure you knew that.

@: BOB

what didn’t work for you, worked to someone else, in whole or in-part, and secondly I don’t remember the last time I had this kind verbal exchange … but of course you have your freedom , and so do I ,

What I had shared, worked for me and I had not encounter any problem with any of Google’s two latest versions of chromes (5.0 & 6.0)

The answer to your first question is, I did not and I do not intend to spam any one, (you can read my post, the decision to applying my opinion or not to, is solemnly an individual’s choice) am too old for that kind un-discipline and uncivil behavior, am grateful to my parents the way they have raised me, and to the kind of a person I have become to be!

the only problem I am having so far with 6.0.408.1 is the bookmark manager. I just get a blank tab, a search entry field, the Bookmark Manager collapsed menu "v" link and when I click on the menu, I get nothing but a narrow pull down with a few horizontal bars and no text.

The bookmark bar works fine and synching to Google Docs seems to be working fine when I add a new bookmark through the bookmark bar.

I have several extensions installed. All appear to be working and nothing obvious if there is an extension that could be creating a conflict with the bookmark manager.

I think what happened is I came across your very similar post on another forum or two, almost verbatim.

Your post essentially explains how to make a "portable Chrome" so that it runs from a portable directory (such as a thumb drive) and can be taken to any machine.

While having a portable version of Chrome is nice, it only solves ONE problem. Portability.

Nowhere on this thread is anyone complaining about Chrome not being portable (unless I missed it). So, I'm not sure what your "solution" actually solves, as it pertains to this thread.

Any of the problems I (and others) are dealing with are known problems with the latest DEV build of Chrome. The dev channel (assuming you're subscribed to it, and not the BETA or STABLE) has regular problems (though rarely severe). For instance, in the latest dev, the tabs resize immediately when closed, rather than waiting for the user to mouse off of the close button. This was a feature that previously existed that was either intentionally or accidentally removed. No amount of making Chrome portable is going to make this functionality any different. Of course, installing the beta or stable version of Chrome would work, but because this is the "Dev Channel Update" thread, nobody would be here if they didn't specifically want the dev releases.

So, if your post is not spam, it's just off topic. It would be like giving everyone great tips on relieving the pain symptoms of arthritis when the forum is about Google TV. While the arthritis tips might be useful, they just belong in another forum.

I don't like that the width of a tab in windows with many tabs gets instantly inflated when a tab is closed.

In the past, it would keep the width of the tab constant, so that I could be clicking on the same spot, and closing one tab after another without moving the mouse.

Now, I must move the mouse to close another tab. I think that at least if the mouse is completely sitting at one place, not moving by a pixel, the width of the tabs should stay fixed, so that multiple clicks may be enough to close many tabs one after another.

12:13 PM, May 26, 2010
Blogger Bob said...

For the records, the tab-resizing will be fixed and will happen the same way it used to... the tabs will not resize if you keep the mouse over the close button.

Bob, thanks for good news. You're almost describing the new behavior as a bug, a regression.

I wonder how such a regression if it's agreed to be one may occur. Wasn't someone needed who has deliberately eliminated the previous, more useful behavior? ;-)

2:36 AM, May 27, 2010
Blogger Bob said...

It was definitely a regression. It has been fixed in the trunk and should (hopefully) be in the next dev build.

I'm not positive, but I think the changes which caused the regression were related to the eventual introduction of application tabs, which is a precursor to the Chrome Web Store.

Bob, I see: looking forward to the Web Store. The preliminary page is already among my toolbar bookmarks. ;-)

It took me some time to realize that the point of this thing is to sell, distribute, and evaluate (by users) applications and not just to make the tabs or extensions look a bit different than usual. :-)

Great idea.
