Stable Channel Update

The Chrome team is excited to announce the promotion of Chrome 29 to the Stable channel for Windows, Mac, Linux and Chrome Frame.  Chrome 29.0.1547.57 contains a number of fixes and improvements, including:
  • Improved Omnibox suggestions based on the recency of sites you have visited
  • Ability to reset your profile back to its original state
  • Many new apps and extensions APIs
  • Lots of stability and performance improvements
Security Fixes and Rewards
Note: Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix. This commonly occurs if the bug exists in a third party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven’t yet fixed.

This update includes 25 security fixes. Below, we highlight some fixes that were either contributed by external researchers or particularly interesting. Please see the Chromium security page for more information.
  • [$1337] [181617] High CVE-2013-2900: Incomplete path sanitization in file handling. Credit to Krystian Bigaj.
  • [$500] [254159] Low CVE-2013-2905: Information leak via overly broad permissions on shared memory files. Credit to Christian Jaeger.
  • [$1337] [257363] High CVE-2013-2901: Integer overflow in ANGLE. Credit to Alex Chapman.
  • [$1000] [260105] High CVE-2013-2902: Use after free in XSLT. Credit to cloudfuzzer.
  • [$1000] [260156] High CVE-2013-2903: Use after free in media element. Credit to cloudfuzzer.
  • [$1000] [260428] High CVE-2013-2904: Use after free in document parsing. Credit to cloudfuzzer.
In addition, our ongoing internal security work was as usual responsible for a wide range of fixes:
  • [274602] CVE-2013-2887: Various fixes from internal audits, fuzzing and other initiatives (Chrome 29).
A partial list of changes is available in the SVN log. Interested in switching to a different release channel? Find out how. If you find a new issue, please let us know by filing a bug.

What happened to the width of the omnibox??! It's way too wide now and there's ugly white space on either side? How did this make it to a stable build?

@Tom, sadly this is something that the developers refuse to fix since it's "working as intended". Still, it would be nice to hear the actual reason for this change since currently it just looks absolutely horrible.

@Sincci agreed, this is a terrible change. I don't know who decided this was a good idea but they are clearly out of touch.

Nice to see that the menu padding is back to normal (even though I am still not a big fan of not using native controls for the menu). However the new omnibox really looks like a styling bug (both font and the whitespaces at the edge).
I find it a bit sad that Google is so incredibly good at algorithms, yet sloppy with UI/UX aspects.

Stable and fast version. Loads pages almost instantly. As others have said, the Omnibox drop down is quite ugly with the large white areas on each side and the new font. I'm sure someone will fix this with an extension, but is that really necessary? Google should not have let this design flaw out.

The latest omnibox changes make me think the Chrome team has forgotten why the browser is named "Chrome." If useless white sidebars wasting space and a larger font, neither of which you can change, are things working as intended, then yes, it's not a bug, it's a mistake. But please keep thinking you know what your users want better than they do, and Firefox will keep being customizable for things like this.

I'm sorry but the Omnibox font size is absolutely horrible. It's like it's a version of chrome for people with bad eyesight.

And the white space on the dropdown looks terrible.

What happened to sleek and simple design?

Please undo the font change to the omni box. horrible.

Also - the reset browser settings is a good idea, but users should be allowed to save and/or import browser settings too.

This allows one to undo the reset if things go awry. Who has a clue as to all of their changed settings? Not me.

We are experiencing problems downloading content using the new version. Worked in previous version and other browsers - doesn't work in this version. App is Flash based and code does a navigatetoURL call which calls a simple PHP script that send back some data the user is then asked to save on their computer. In the new version a new window opens but no download happens.

The OmniBox broke in this release. The font size and style suddenly became ugly and huge. Also there is loads of whitespace clutter left/right of the box. Please fix this/return to previous or give options for omnibar fontsize.

This is a reason to abandon chrome and use FireFox again.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Besides the too large font (this really hurts my eyes) there is the problem that the omnibox now displays some letters bold and some letters normal in one URL.

There is no problem adding functionality but why did you break the omnibox in a way, that it now looks like designed by a 3yr old????

Newest version (29) doesn't work for me. The omnibox freezes, as soon as I click a link a new tab opens; click on the tab it immediately shuts!
