I have more problems with the new version: I cannot right click on selected text. Also, I cannot login on my chase.com. Clicking the submit button just doesn't do anything.

Update Server Not Available (error:3)

Blogger The MAZZTer said...

Update Server Not Available (error:3) is an old bug for me, it's been happening for a number of releases now.

Of more concern to me though is the broken downloads and history pages. No CSS formatting and most of the JavaScript is broken or missing (not sure which). Also no right click menu so you can't remove downloads or history. Not that this is a new bug, it's been in the last several releases.

Then there's the new bugs, the annoying little things, such as the progress wheel has disappeared when first navigating away from the new tab page. Then the undocked bookmarks bar glitches when you navigate similarly. Also FTP support is 100% broken (not sure how you can ship a "new" FTP engine when neither can be used...?). Not sure if the FTP issue is new though.

All in all a rather poor quality release. Maybe I'm expecting too much from a dev branch but they started out good enough.

URGENT! VULNERABILITY!

My Kaspersky Internet Security detected today (25/03/09) a vulnerability
in Chrome (2.0.171.0)´s GOOGLE GEARS...

AS to right click, i have a solution that when you select the text just hold the left key and press the right key, then it works. good luck!

All: The right-click bug is issue 8883 (http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=8883).

@Marcelo: I don't know why Kaspersky is detecting any problem with Gears in Google Chrome. The link you point to is a vulnerability that we fixed in December (http://googlechromereleases.blogspot.com/2008/12/beta-release-0415429.html). Google Chrome 171 uses Gears 0.5.16, so it should not be an issue.

Update Server not available (Error 3) is a old and common bug for Vista and Windows 7 users. I don't know what Chrome devs are doing about it, but it seems that they are largely ignoring it for now.

Latest update is a lot faster for me, a real lot from 2.0.170.0. But there are some rendering glitch and screen flashing issues when opening the browser.

Blogger The MAZZTer said...

Marcelo: The version of Gears used in this release (0.5.16.0, see about:plugins) is clearly newer than the recommended version (0.5.4.2). Is it too much to ask to check version numbers before sounding alarms?

I can confirm context menu and cut/copy/paste options are not working. Only workaround I know is selecting the text and using keyboard shortcuts. Ctrl+C for copy, Ctrl+X for cut, and Ctrl+V for paste.

"The MAZZTer" and "Mark Larson (Google)":

I'm sorry, but my Kaspersky continues detecting the
vulnerability (http://www.viruslist.com/en/advisories/33062)
in "gears.dll" archive.

Local: C:\Users\Myname\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\2.0.171.0\gears.dll

It can be a false positive or "gears.dll" archive is a old archive from a old
Chrome version that still stays on my pc!

My Chrome version is 2.0.171.0 (with Google Gears 0.5.16.0).

Thanks!

I've enabled the new bookmark menu but I can't see what people, who've posted above, like about it. It doesn't seem to offer much more than the existing Chrome bookmark functionality.

I was hoping that the new bookmark menu would be something that would remain open (like IE or Firefox) -- that would be good!

Blogger Locke said...

turns out enabling that feature didn't fix the problem with copy/pasting text. It was just the way the dice rolled after I enabled it.

(translation: it's still bugged, but barely an annoyance )

Be patient. Think the new features get switched on by default, and some bug fixes (ie. the currently bugged context menu.) are on their way. ^^

Suggestion for full screen mode: show tabs! It is kind of hard to navigate the tabs using the Ctrl + # shortcut unless you memorize which tab is which.

Virtually every time I open Chrome, I physically check for an new update! I've had to temporarily switch back to Firefox due to the current issues w/ the dev channel version.

I love Chrome! But, I still want a download manager that's just like Firefox.

@Blewby I completely agree!! Chrome is my favorite browser EXCEPT for trying to print selected text. It is so frustrating to have to copy my link address and open IE or FF and re-select my text and then print the selected paragraphs.

Ever since I installed this latest beta 2.0.169.1, Google Chrome has been very slow in my system. Even switching between open tabs results in lots of disk activity and therefore takes a long time to respond. I tried dev versions until 2.0.171.0, and the problem remained. I suspect it's because every page really is in a different process now, and some other changes to reduce memory use.

I have gone back to latest stable version, and Chrome is fast again.

Resolving Issue: 1845 actually causes its own problems. Frequently users need to highlight text using ctrl+shift+arrow. This can unexpectedly trigger right-alignment, which is a huge pain. Neither ff nor ie acts this way.

@cyrus @lajos : Ditto the request to look into what made USAA's web-site break after upgrading to Chrome 2, and also to look into how to get Chrome to play nicely with USAA Deposit @Home.

I would love to see a compatibility plug-in that would let you masquerade as IE, FF, or Safari for specific URL prefixes.

If you want to have Chrome work with USAA for banking, go to the 'Dev' channel and download that version. It works just fine, and I am on version 3.0.182.3. It's actually quite fast now! Please see this article:

The above link describes how to make Chrome work with USAA. I was having the same problem and was frustrated. The above article recommends using the 'DEV' channel version of Chrome, which I can say works just fine with USAA. I am on version 3.0.182.3. The article stated that the beta build ending in .28 was working too, but that link now loads you with .30, and the USAA issue is broken again (I tested that one out as well).
